1-12-94 Setup V-Series Modems
The proper setup for all Zoom V-series modems... Use AT&F&C1&D2 (&D0
for Mac) for the init string.(for the White V42bis [2400] or Turbo modems
add S36=7 to the string) OR pick the Hayes 2400 from software selection.
Set RTS/CTS =ON, Speed to 38,400 or 57,600 (9600+ models) or 9600 (2400
v42bis models), do not follow modem connect/autobaud detect=OFF/NO. If your
software has the option to 'drop DTR to hang-up' set that to YES. When you
enter any AT command, that sets the port/modem speed, bits & parity. If you
do AT&W all current settings are saved, including speed, bits, parity & the
modem will 'awaken' with those settings. >>> Do NOT turn ON any Software
protocols (V42bis/Mnp), as the modem has them in hardware. <<<. If you
want to see true modem-modem connect speed rather than the default
computer-modem speed, put S95=1 in the string. S95=0 is default.
Any program that uses ATZ in the intitialization or command string, is
expecting that it is the only software that you will be using on the
computer with that modem. As that is extremely unlikely, we disapprove of
that practice. Replace the ATZ with (99% of the time) AT&F&C1&D2. Put in
whatever they use for a carraige return (if they show one). If there are
additional parameters put them between the above string and the carraige
return character(s). (Most often the ^M is used for carraige return.)
Some commands for some Hayes hi-speed modems are proprietary (not CCITT
v32bis) so picking a Hayes hi-speed modem is not the right choice. IF you
must pick a modem, pick a Hayes Smartmodem 2400.
>>> I always recommend you start any string AT&F in all programs to
make sure it's set back to factory, eliminating any conflicting setup from
another program.
Some (usually old) serial cables are fine for old 2400 modems, but
don't have enough pins connected for a modern 'V' modem. (pins 2-8, & 20)
The cable must support hardware flow control.
Some Fax software (Winfax for example) does not reset the modem to
Data mode when done. AT+FCLASS=0 will reset to data mode.
NEVER set over 19,200 in Windows, unless you have an alternate com
driver like TURBOCOM.DRV
